Swedish citizenship is generally obtained by descent to those born to Swedish parents. Permanent residents of Sweden can also obtain citizenship by fulfilling a residency requirement of living in Sweden for at least five years. Once obtained, Swedish citizens enjoy the right to enter and leave Sweden, to vote in elections, and to carry a Swedish and European passport, among other benefits.
